Player ratings: Kroos saves face in a lacklustre Germany performance

Germany looked devoid of creativity as they suffered a 0:1 loss to a well drilled Brazilian squad. Only Toni Kroos stood out in Die Mannschaft, if slightly.

Toni Kroos

Toni was the best player for Germany on the pitch as he controlled most of the play. He rotated the ball effectively and always looked to create an opportunity to create a chance.

Marvin Plattenhardt

One of the better players in the German squad today, Marvin attacked diligently and defended pretty well. He was caught a bit out of position for the goal but he was probably the most consistent player today.

Antonio Rüdiger

Antonio like Jerome was always put under pressure by the constant press of Gabriel Jesus. His defensive positioning was always suspect and the defence looked shaky whenever he had the ball.

Joshua Kimmich

A bright spark in attack, the young right back, was very much involved in most of the German attacks but he was caught out defensively. Flaws in his game are being shown as he is neglecting his defensive duties.

Jérôme Boateng

Captain for the day, Jérôme was not at his imperious best. He had good moments with his trademark long balls and switch of play but Gabriel Jesus gave him a lot of trouble with his pace. He should have done better too with the goal. Not a great day on the field.

Leon Goretzka

The young German midfielder was being played in a more advanced role and he couldn’t take control like he normally does. Leon had his moments with few good crosses and he created few good chances but was not as effective. He ran a great length and defended well though.

Leroy Sane

Leroy Sane looked good in spades but the decisions that he made very bad. He ventured forward well and had a good understanding with Plattenhardt but could not actually create a clear-cut chance. The Immense talent is present, but he needs to show it.

Ilkay Gündoğan

Ilkay started in a much deeper position than he normally does for his club, which made his impact very limited. He made good runs into the box to create chances but his erratic finishing cost him.

Sandro Wagner

Brought on for Mario Gómez, the Bayern striker had few good half chances but couldn’t do anything with them. He provided a domineering presence that was tough to deal with for Thiago Silva and co. Not a great performance.

Lars Stindl

Lars Stindl was similar to Julian, tried to create space for players to run into but had almost little to no impact.

Julian Brandt

Julian Brandt came on for ineffectual Leroy Sané but he himself couldn’t do anything against a very well drilled defence. He was not terrible but not amazing either.

Mario Gómez

The former Bayern striker and the infamous Button Connoisseur was particularly poor with spending most of the time offside. He was very ineffective and almost a shadow. It will take a lot of improvement in his form to make the world cup squad if this performance is to go by.

Kevin Trapp

Trapp had a nightmare in goal, as the lack of momentum due to virtually zero game time was evident. The Paris Saint-Germain keeper’s distribution under pressure was particularly poor and he was effectively at fault for the only goal as he made a mess of the shot aimed at him.

Julian Draxler

Draxler was almost invisible with little to no impact on the field. He was wasteful, didn’t create a decent opportunity. Very disappointing performance.
