We expect a strong lineup despite injuries on Friday as Bundesliga action resumes with a big contest between fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen and FC Bayern.
Bayern have been in wonderful form since the return of treble-winning coach Jupp Heynckes. The Münchners have won 15 of their 16 competitive matches under Heynckes with victims like RB Leipzig, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund. The only blemish came against Borussia Mönchengladbach in a 2:1 loss where Bayern commanded every attacking statistic except where it really mattered.
Bayern Munich will be looking to continue firing on all cylinders when they face Bayer Leverkusen. Not having scored in three games at Bayer Arena is a concern. Bayern are also not in tip-top shape with a number of players out injured. Bayer Leverkusen have been in fine form recently and are unbeaten in their last 12 matches.
Bayern will definitely need a good lineup in a match if they are to overcome adversity and get the win.
Sandro Wagner is likely to lead the line in the 4-2-3-1 formation, which Jupp Heynckes will likely employ in this match. Jupp indicated in his presser that Robert Lewandowski will not travel with the team to Leverkusen. The silver lining over the winter break was the return of Arjen Robben. However, he is unlikely to start this match because of the coach’s policy of not rushing players back.
Kingsley Coman and Frank Ribéry will likely pilot the wings but the major question lies in the CAM position. Jupp will either go for the creativity of James Rodríguez or the poaching ability of Thomas Müller. Jupp Heynckes may prioritize Thomas Müller’s ccoring ability in this position since it will be Wagner’s first competitive game for Bayern.
Jupp Heynckes may opt for defensive stability, employing Javi Martínez to pair with Arturo Vidal. The latter has been enjoying great form and is now Bayern’s second highest goal scorer.
Jupp Heynckes is likely to play David Alaba and Rafinha as the full-backs with Jérôme Boateng and Niklas Süle in central positions. Mats Hummels has been ruled out of the match completely. Jupp has indicated that Joshua Kimmich will travel with the squad, but he doesn’t know if he will start as yet.
