Player ratings: Sven Ulreich tops a Bayern showcase in Dortmund

Bayern’s 3:1 victory against Borussia Dortmund left some very good impressions, and indeed some very good ratings.
Die Roten showed their true class today in all aspects of the game. Great defensive play, precise midfield passing play and razor-sharp attacking. All in all, this was the dominant display Jupp Heynckes and all Bayern fans expect to see. The pleasure of watching Bayern do what it did today at the Signal-Iduna Park tempts me to give every player a 10 on 10.

Sven Ulreich

Ulle tops our list as the best player on the pitch. He made crucial saves including a brilliant one-on-one save vs Andriy Yarmolenko in the first half means Bayern have a great backup for Manuel Neuer. His anticipation and blocking of crosses, positioning and overall reflexes in this match have been outstanding. Still, he was unlucky to concede in the dying minutes to a brilliant strike by Marc Bartra.

Arjen Robben

Robben produced the brilliant opening goal. He also made great runs cutting inside, forcing Marcel Schmelzer to come inside making space for Joshua Kimmich. This enabled Kimmich to provide a brilliant assist for Bayern’s second. At the of the second half, Robben made a brilliant run keeping the ball in play before providing a great cross in with his right foot – yes, his right –  for a free header for Robert Lewandowski. Lewy somehow failed to finish from point-blank range.

Kingsley Coman

His runs, his pace was always a great thing to watch. However, what made him reach the excellent bracket was his vision which surprisingly seemed exceptional today. After a great run down the left, he found James Rodríguez in space on the other end of the box, leading up to Bayern’s first. A few minutes later, he nearly created another when his cross was millimetres away from the toe of Javi Martínez who had an open goal to aim at. Undoubtedly, he was Bayern’s most lethal weapon especially in counterattack against a Dortmund side that was holding a high line.

James Rodríguez

Welcome home, you Colombian genius. With every game, James Rodriguez is getting better and better. The set up for the first goal was simply beautiful. He controlled the cross from Kingsley Coman brilliantly and unselfishly tee’ed up Arjen Robben who was never going to miss a left-footer from there.

Robert Lewandowski

The only reason he isn’t in the Excellent category is due to the clear 1 v 1 chances he scoffed up in the game. Having said that, Bayern’s second goal was probably one of the smartest goals you’ll see. Running towards the ball, finishing with the goal behind seems impossible. Maybe for most but not for him. He pulls out a backheel flick so unexpectedly and so beautifully that I’m tempted to put him in the excellent category just for that.

Joshua Kimmich

Josh made great runs down the right, brilliant overlaps. He also provided great crossing and got yet another assist. It was hard to keep him out of this category as he is the most consistent Bayern player this season by far.

Niklas Süle

We saw brilliant tackling from him. He also saved a great chance in the first half and produced arguably his best performance in a Bayern shirt so far. He had a great physical presence, great tackling skills and made intelligent interceptions.

Mats Hummels

Hummels was great overall but the standout moment he had was at the 33rd-minute mark. He played an exceptional outside-of-the-foot pass to unleash Lewandowski behind the defence and make a clear chance for the striker who unfortunately didn’t do much with it.

David Alaba

Scorer of Bayern’s third goal which was actually meant as a cross to Lewandowski. His give and go with Kingsley Coman was an attacking treat to watch for Bayern fans.

Thiago Alcântara

He had a good game but nothing exceptional. He was his typical self, controlling and marshalling the troops in midfield.

Javi Martínez

A true number 6 as Jupp Heynkes describes him. He played a good game today making occasional forward runs as well as defending and spraying the ball around as he does so well.
