Holger Badstuber has left Bayern Munich for at least half a year. The former German international has joined Bundesliga side Schalke 04 on loan.
A nearly 15-year long chapter at Bayern Munich has found its end – for now. Holger Badstuber, after making it through the club’s own youth ranks, has left the Bavarian capital to go North, straight to the Ruhr area.
Badstuber seeked the loan opportunity to increase his playing time. On the other hand, coach Carlo Ancelotti did not see the often-injured centre-back anywhere near the first XI, which is why he agreed to the deal. During his press conference, he underlined his position: “We are open. If he decides to stay, we are happy. If he decided to play for another club for six months, we are open to discuss it.”
Several media reports emphasized Badstuber’s unhappiness with his current situation. Despite finally reaching full health, the 31-time German international was only used in three matches in all competitions by Ancelotti in 2016-17. Thomas Müller, who accompanied Badstuber on his way towards the first team years ago, understands the situation of his teammate: “For Holger, it is very important to get playing time. He can then show how much quality he has got in him. I just wish him that he plays as many games as possible.”
Bayern extended the centre-back’s contract for one year, until 2018. Badstuber’s previous deal would have ended in the summer, making a loan move pointless. The club will reassess the player’s situation during the summer break.
Many games and more injuries
Ever since his Bundesliga debut back in 2009, Badstuber played (only) 118 further matches in Germany’s highest division. Unsurprisingly, all of them came for Die Roten. The shaky, but emotional video below shows his only Bundesliga goal in the 2009-10 season against Borussia Mönchengladbach. A lovely free kick finding the top corner..
Best of luck in Gelsenkirchen! It will strange to see you wearing a blue kit, though.
