Bayern power rankings, April 2016

Regime change. Young Frenchman Kingsley Coman takes over our power rankings for April because he is sensational enough.

Man of the month

Kingsley Coman9.5: Kingsley Coman

How often do you see a 19 years old kid knocking the club that loaned him out of the Champions League with an ice-cold finish that Arjen Robben could easily claim as his own? His dribbling, runs and passes also destroyed Werder Bremen. Hats off! ( March: 8)

Going strong

Robert Lewandowski9: Robert Lewandowski

Bob scored in most of the games recently, but he had more quiet spells than usual. Importantly, his average performance against Dortmund makes me hope he does not go silent in other big games. ( March: 9.5)

Thomas Müller9: Thomas Müller

Average at the beginning of the month, Thomas has stormed back. His role was essential in the 5:0 rout against Bremen. He played a huge game, with a goal and an assist, in the comeback against Juventus. Never doubt the Raumdeuter. ( March: 8.5)

Manuel Neuer9: Manuel Neuer

He had to make more saves than usual in recent weeks. That is a bittersweet thing. It shows that he plays excellently in goal, but it betrays a weaker defence. Kudos to Manuel, especially for keeping Bayern in the game against Juventus. (March: 9)

Franck Ribéry8.5: Franck Ribéry

His rating could have gone down. He was present but average in a few games, such as Dortmund. He did well without scoring against Bremen. His spectacular effort on Saturday when FCB hosted Frankfurt however made the month! I still think he can take an extra step to be dominant, though. (March: 8.5)

Arturo Vidal8.5: Arturo Vidal

Arturo finally connected with the team and the fans. A massive performance against Juventus and two assists last month have proven that he belongs to Munich. Imagine what he could do as a box-to-box under Carlo Ancelotti. (March: 8.5)

Thiago Alcantara8.5: Thiago Alcântara

If he does not play his best football when Vidal is around, Thiago has been solid without him against Bremen. Passing brilliance was on display. His role in the comeback against Juventus also makes me say there is hope for vintage Thiago in the final stages of the season. ( March: 7.5)

Joshua Kimmich8.5: Joshua Kimmich

He excelled in Dortmund, intercepting passes and maintaining possession. He held his own in the Juventus return leg. He made big plays against Köln. I am very happy with his performances even though he needs to gain more experience to be consistent. (March: 8.5)

Doing OK

Philipp Lahm7.5: Philipp Lahm

Der Kapitän alternates between right-back, right wing-back and central midfielder with ease but… I cannot say I am impressed with him these days. His leadership cannot be doubted but his impact on the games becomes a question mark. ( March: 8)

Can improve

David Alaba7.5: David Alaba

March may have been the worst month for Alaba in a Bayern kit. He made positional and defensive mistakes. He was especially bad against Juventus. I attribute this to an extended stint at centre-back, a position he does not belong to. ( March: 9)

Douglas Costa7.5: Douglas Costa

Persistent and ultimately successful when Bayern came back to beat Juventus, Douglas was inconsistent the rest of the way. He can do better. (March: 7.5)

Juan Bernat7.5: Juan Bernat

Without being brilliant, Bernat reversed trends lately. He provides good runs and crosses on the left flank and does a little better defensively. There is much room for improvement, but this is a start. ( March: 7)

Rafinha7: Rafinha

He played rather well against Köln, providing support to Kingsley Coman on the right flank and disrupting attacks. A diminished role in the squad, however, holds the rating down. (March: unrated)

Xabi Alonso7: Xabi Alonso

He looked good against lowly Bremen, did OK against Dortmund but played so poorly against Juventus that he does not deserve an improved rating. Press Alonso and his game collapses. (March: 7)

Medhi Benatia6: Medhi Benatia

Once the best defender in Serie A, Benatia has to be acknowledged as a failure in Munich. Injuries took his powers away. Sell. (March: unrated)

Due to injury or lack of playing time: Ulreich, Robben, Boateng, Badstuber, Götze, Starke, Rode, Martínez, Tasci
