Bayern Munich have arrived in Doha yesterday and completed their first training session on Wednesday morning. Afterwards, coach Carlo Ancelotti held his first press conference of 2017. All the details in today’s Bayern Express.
As we reported on January 1, one member of the staff was missing to get things going in the new year. Paul Clement has officially been appointed manager of Premier League side Swansea City and did not make the flight to Qatar anymore. Bayern coaching legend Hermann Gerland moves up one spot in the internal ranking and becomes first assistant to Ancelotti.
Only possible winter transfer is Badstuber
On his first press conference, Carlo Ancelotti chimed in on several topics surrounding the club at the moment. Here are the Italian’s key quotes regarding…
…his players’ conditions: “It is good. Only Sven Ulreich, Javi Martínez and Kingsley Coman still have small problems. We can use the week to prepare ourselves for the rest of the season.”
…a possible transfer of Holger Badstuber: “It took a while until he reached a good form. He did not play so much, but firstly it was important that he got fit. Now he is. We did not talk about his future, but we are open: If he wants to stay, we are happy, because he is a real professional. If he wants to collect playing time for six months, we are open as well.”
…other transfers, for example at centre-back if Badstuber left: “Jérôme Boateng returns after six to eight weeks, David Alaba can play there very nicely too. I have a lot of trust in Mats Hummels and Javi Martínez. The rumours regarding Arturo Vidal are absolute rubbish. No new players will arrive [this winter], the squad is complete.”
…Paul Clement’s exit: “It was surprising for us. He received the offer from Swansea and decided to go back to England. I wish him best of luck, he was a great assistant and friend. For Bayern, it will not be a problem, we have Hermann Gerland and my son Davide. Paul had a great motivation to become Premier League manager and all the skills to be successful there.”
…Thomas Müller’s position: “He is a very intelligent player and can always find the right position. He played a lot during the first half of the season and will also play a lot during the second.”
Back to work in Doha
The first training session of the Bavarians in Doha lasted 67 minutes. After getting used to the climate and new surroundings, Carlo Ancelotti hopes to increase the intensity during the upcoming days. 25 degrees and sunshine served as conditions around the training pitch.
Light warm-up fitness exercises got things going on Wednesday morning. Afterwards, the squad completed passing drills in small and large groups, before finishing things off with a competitive four-goal match.
During the afternoon, Die Roten will follow the morning session up with a second one.
